On Saturday May 25, 2002 the Hartford Fire Department responded to a call for a mattress fire in the halls of a large 4 story H-Shaped Brick on Huntington St. District 1 en-route order a 2nd alarm due to reports of people trapped on the 3rd floor. Engine 5 on arrival reported that he had numerous civilians hanging out windows on all sides. Civilians had already brought a extension ladder and assisted two infants from the smoky floor. Members from ladder 5 & Ladder 3 assisted more then 10 civilians trapped on the fire floor and above due the heavy fire condition in the common hallway. The fire is under investigation and was deemed suspicious. District Chief Erickson accredited the quick thinking of the responding Acting District Chief to the quick and orderly removal of so many trapped civilians.

Last night (10/10/2002) just after 630p a three alarm fire broke out in large single family house on Root Road in Somers. Firefighters had a difficult time with the fire due to having to shuttle water from approximately 2 miles away. The lack of being able to sustain a water supply for any length of time greatly hampered the efforts and firefighters had to be pulled from the building not too long after they arrived.

Enfield CT 12/07/2002 - At approximately 14:45hrs the Thompsonville Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 942 Enfield St in a 3 story wood frame dwelling. On arrival the first engine had fire showing from the second and third floor in the front and began an interior attack. Subsequent units arrived and an aggressive interior attack was being made when an explosion occurred on the third floor sending many firefighters scurrying and 3 or 4 bailing for their lives down the back stairwell. The two alarm fire took about nearly two hours to control and sent 6 firefighters to the hospital I believe three went with burns. The Thompsonville fire marshal and State Fire Marshal are investigating the cause.
