Submitted: 2/28/2010 BROCKTON, MA (PLYMOUTH COUNTY) - Around 1000 hours on the morning of Friday, February 26, 2010, just as a jury was deliberating a murder trial, the Superior Courthouse at 72 Belmont Street in Brockton needed to be evacuated after several people fell ill after smelling a strange odor. The odor was caused by a janitor, who was attempting to clean a toilet. The janitor apparently mixed two chemicals together, that caused a vapor cloud. The vapor cloud caused some people who were exposed to it feel nauseous and have difficulty breathing. Brockton-EMS units, contracted by American Medical Response, responded to the scene with multiple ambulances and supervisors. Five victims were transported to local hospitals. Among those who were evacuated while the source was investigated and the building was ventilated was eighteen inmates. Fire crews set up a positive pressure ventilation fan in the front door to assist in ventilating the building. A pre-connected hose line was stretched off of Engine-4, and brought to the second floor, but was not charged. Brockton Fire responded with Squad-A, Engine-4, Engine-2, Engine-5, Ladder-1, the Tactical Support Unit, Car-56 and several Fire Prevention officers. The Courthouse remained closed for the rest of the day on Friday. It is scheduled to re-open for business on Monday morning.
