CRANSTON - The members of the Cranston Fire Department were kept busy on January 8, just after midnight, with two fires in the city. The first fire, at the Cranston Veterans Ice Rink on Phoenix Avenue, required the response of three engines, two ladders and the special hazards unit. Upon arrival, companies had heavy smoke showing from a 100-by-500 foot, Truss-roof, commercial Ice Rink.
Companies stretched lines to the interior, but were evacuated from the building due to heavy smoke and the uncertainty of the fire's location. As companies were picking up from the ice rink a report of a fire at 461 Atwood Avenue was received.
Police were first on-scene and reported a building fully involved. Mutual aid from surrounding towns, along with Cranston apparatus, were dispatched.
The 20-by-40 foot, commercial had heavy fire showing as companies arrived. The second fire was brought under control in about one hour.
